Protocol Kyoto is the most important instrument to fight against climate change. It contains the commitment of most industrialized countries to reduce their emissions of certain greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, 5% on average.
The Kyoto Protocol tackles emissions of six greenhouse gases:
- carbon dioxide (CO2);
- methane (CH4);
- l nitrous oxide (N2O);
- the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs);
- the perfluorocarbons (PFCs);
- sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).
It represents a major step forward in the fight against global warming because it includes binding, quantified objectives for limiting and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
